Weekend Wrap Up

This weekend I was quite busy enjoying my city. One thing I love about city living is there is always something to do on the weekend.

On Friday, we met up with some friends and went to Friday Night Market. This was an evening of food trucks, local vendors, and live music all under the stars. Good food, good drinks, and good company…what more could a girl ask for?

On Saturday, I went to the famous Castro Theater to see a live drag show called Coven: Return of the Manderson Sisters. This show was great! It was the perfect amount of over the top and fabulous. Part of the fun of the show was that they encouraged the audience to dress up. Unfortunatly, we had too much fun and I forgot to take a picture of our group :(. I was excited because I crocheted my own witch hat. I will have to post pictures later in the week. (Sorry for the poor picture quality. My iPhone was not the best at long range pictures in the dark.)

I also had time to  finally finished the baby gifts for my friend. I put a cute little scallop edge on the Baby Burrito Blanket, which I think adds the perfect amount of girly touch to it. I also knit a hat and booties as an additional gift. I really love these booties. I think the color contrast on the toe gives it a unique touch. I got the pattern from here. The pattern is super easy to make and is a great way to use up yarn scraps. I plan on make several more pairs for future babies.

Paper Flowers

I saw these paper peonies on Pinterest not too long ago and I finally decided to give them a try. I thought maybe I could make them with my students toward the spring or for Mother’s Day (early planning huh?). However, as pretty as the flower came out, there was just too much hot gluing action to make it safe for kids under the age of 10.

The craft was pretty simple to make once I organized the sizes of petals. I would say it took me about 20 minutes to creat one flower from start to finish.

I also upcycled an old glass drink bottle to make a cute vase for my flower. According to Michael’s Arts and Craft Store milk jugs are the next Mason jars.

I painted the jar with some Craft Smart Acrylic Paint leaving a 2 inch gap from the lip of the jar (twine will cover the unpainted portion). I applied 3 coats of paint letting it dry in between coats. Later, I added the twine to the unpainted part of the vase and Tah Dah!!!. This cute little project is now sitting in my office.

Brit+Co Re:Make 2014

On Saturday, one of my favorite websites Brit + Co held their  annual RE:Make festival in San Francisco. I love this website/company because they cover an eclectic range of topics from DIY to technology to health. If you haven’t checked out their website or downloaded the app you are missing out.

As for the festival… It was AWESOME! There were about 6 DIY stations, tons of makers selling their products, a DJ, food trucks, and a giant Twister board. When we walked into the Fort Mason Pavilion, I felt like I could hardly contain myself. It was DIY heaven!

Brit + Co has a shop on their website as well. Not only can you buy handcrafted items (similar to Etsy), but you can buy DIY kits to make amazing items for yourself. There were too many choices that I couldn’t decide on a kit to buy at the fair. (I am going to mull it over and purchase one online.)  Overall, I had a stellar day and can’t wait till Re:MAKE 2015!

 

Violated!

Dear San Francisco,

I knew in my mind that living the city life had risk and you were no different. I tried to be smart on the streets and stayed out of the “bad areas.” Well last night I was too trusting. One of your citizens violated my property and it left me feeling so hurt. How could this happen? Why did this happen? Did I give people too much credit?

Last night, I was out in Downtown San Francisco. I parked my car on the street and put all of our valuables in the trunk. I left my bag of knitting projects in the rear of the car. Three hours later, we returned to my knitting being strewn all over the sidewalk and my car window being smashed out. Feelings of shock, anger, and fear went instantly through my body. Thankfully no one was injured, nor were our valuables stolen. However, I am a little upset about my precious lost knitting items. They stole my tools bag ( holds stitch holders, sewing needles, buttons, cable needle…etc) , two of my favorite circulars, a few straight needles, my crafting scissors, and a skein of yarn. I had 3 WIPs, two of which I promptly threw in the trash as they were tangled and filthy. Such a bummer.

Amoung the WIPs was my Baby Burrito blanket. It got stained (by just coffee I hope) and thrown on the ground. I have attempted to hand wash it in hot water to see if it could be saved. However, knowing what it has been through, I don’t know if I want to gift it to my friend. Any thoughts?

In the meantime, I will finish writing my insurance claim and clean up my car. The learned lesson in all of this: Nothing is ever safe in your car. Not even your knitting. 😕
